New Bee Education Centre and Teaching Apiary
Latest News
Weybridge Beekeepers are keen to develop an education centre and a teaching apiary to help train newcomers in the craft of beekeeping and be of educational benefit to the wider community.
We had begun fundraising and were at an advanced stage in our plans to acquire and develop a plot at 77A Pleasant Place, Hersham. Unfortunately recent developments regarding access rights to this site via the small access road off Pleasant Place now mean that this option is no longer possible for us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the overwhelming majority of local residents for their support for our plans and their kind offers of help.
We are continuing our search for suitable facilities for our education centre and would be pleased to hear from anyone who thinks they may be able to help.
Weybridge Beekeepers have been given three grants towards the project:
- Elmbridge Borough Council CIL grant £20,000
- Elmbridge Borough Council Annual Grant £2,000
- Johnson Wax Charitable Trust £8,000

Now 77A Pleasant Place is no longer a viable option for us because of the recent developments over the access rights, Weybridge Beekeepers are searching for a suitable location for their education centre. The details below explain our objectives and the sort of facilities we had considered ideal.
The objectives are:
- To provide a centre in Hersham for the Weybridge division of Surrey Beekeepers Association
- To create a new Bee Education Centre to support both new beekeepers and provide a centre for further education of existing beekeepers
- Create a dedicated teaching Apiary for the training of students and school visits
- To provide information on beekeeping and the value of pollinating insects to school children, youth groups and the wider community through educational visits
- To create a honey extraction room for use by members
The site today has on it a timber frame bungalow built some 40+ years ago that has been left derelict for over 20 years. We are seeking to bring back a piece of land and building plot into the community by creating a new facility that can be enjoyed by all. It will also help protect the land from any further development as it is a great use of the green belt site for an environmental purpose. Weybridge Beekeepers has received approval in principal for a 20 year lease on the land from Elmbridge Borough Council.
